Eye Conditions

There are various eye conditions that can cause visual problems. Read on to learn about the most common conditions.

Myopia

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is a vision condition that causes people to have difficulty seeing objects that are far away. These patients have problems seeing things such as the school blackboard, traffic signs, clocks, and other objects, but have no problems with close-up objects such as the newspaper. Over ¼ of adults worldwide are affected by myopia.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a very common vision problem, but most people don't know what it is. Usually it’s caused by an oblong or oval shaped cornea. A normal cornea is round like a basketball, while a cornea with astigmatism is oval like a football. Most types of astigmatism can be corrected with contact lenses.

Hyperopia

Farsightedness, or Hyperopia, is a vision condition that causes people to have difficulty seeing objects that are close up. The farsighted eye is shorter than normal. Light focuses behind the retina instead of directly on it. These patients have problems doing things such as reading the newspaper or working on a computer, but have no problems with far away objects such as the school blackboard or street signs. Over ¼ of adults worldwide are affected by hyperopia.

Presbyopia

Usually around the age of 40, people begin to experience blurred near vision. Simple things such as when reading the newspaper or working at the computer are no longer so simple. Unfortunately, presbyopia affects everyone at some point. Currently an estimated 128 million people in the United States have presbyopia.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive disease in which the cornea thins and changes shape. It usually affects teens and people in their early twenties. Normal corneas are round, but with Keratoconus, the cornea bulges and becomes pointy or cone shaped. This changes the way light entering the eye, hits the retina and causes distorted vision. Keratoconus can occur in one or both eyes.

Post Surgical/Trauma and Specialty Designs

Many of us will come to a point in our life where we may choose to have Laser related refractive surgery or require some type of other surgical procedure involving our eyes. In some cases results are less than desired so contact lenses are a great way to allow you to see as you did before. If you have an irregular cornea, then Contex lenses may be able to help you.
